ChatGPT subscriptions now include API credits, matching Anthropic's deal

A small business can now cover the API cost of an AI assistant pilot with the same $100, $200, or $500 ChatGPT or Claude subscription one team member already pays for. OpenAI just copied Anthropic's benefit: paid plans now include matching API credits that flow into your organization each month.

Simon Willison flagged the launch: a $200 ChatGPT tier gives you $200 of API usage on top of the chat product. Anthropic rolled out the same structure earlier in October for Max and Team plans. Credits expire monthly, so they are a usage perk, not a wallet top-up.

What this changes for a small automation pipeline

If you were putting off an AI agent for leads, invoice OCR or ticket triage, the entry cost is now effectively zero marginal spend above a subscription someone on the team already uses. For a typical lead-reply bot or document extractor running on Claude or GPT, $100-$200 of monthly credits covers thousands of calls - enough for a real pilot on live data. Pick one process, build it against the provider whose subscription you keep anyway, then move to a dedicated API billing account only when volume outgrows the credits - see pricing tiers for automation projects for how model spend stacks with build time.

Why it matters: The providers are competing on bundling now, so the question shifts from which model to pick to which process to automate first - the inference budget is already on the table.
